Observations and Anecdotal Information
Indigenous cultures all over North America have used Grindelia essential oil, commonly known as gumweed or gum plant.
Among its many uses, it is a powerful treatment for asthma and bronchial spasm. It is very effective in any cases where phlegm produced obstruction in the airways. Simply inhaling Grindelia essential oil will open passages and clear bronchial tubes.
It is also a powerful antispasmodic, which can relieve coughing and spasms. It is so effective in clearing the whole respiratory system, that it has become known as an herbal treatment for emphysema. Coughing, mucus in the nose and throat, and all forms of respiratory illness can be remedied with Grindelia.
It is also a helpful treatment for hives, rashes, and poison ivy–any type of skin eruptions. Grindelia was once a listed “drug” for the treatment of asthma and whooping cough. Drug companies still formulate a synthetic form of this plant for those purposes.
