Observations and Anecdotal Information
Known as Amazon Cinnamon, the ocotea tree’s extracts have been used as a tea and a flavoring for many centuries in the Amazon rain forest.
Its main known healing properties include the ability to lower blood sugar, almost immediately when a drop of diluted oil is placed in the mouth. It carries a very high level of humulene, a constituent that helps balance the body’s internal reaction to injury and irritation - which means it can reduce swelling, pain, and inflammation.
Amazon Cinnamon has been traditionally used to support proper digestion, relieve digestive upsets, gas, bloating, and heartburn. It has also been used as a disinfectant, having an especially beneficial effect on skin funguses, and foot fungus in particular. It is also a great support for healing candida, and can be taken internally for that purpose. It is effective against a number of parasites, both in the blood and in the digestive tract.
Ocotea essential oil has only a small percentage of cinnamaldehyde (the skin sensitizing constituent in cinnamon oil), making it much less sensitizing than either cassia or cinnamon. It has a slightly citrus top note and a mild cinnamon undertone in the base note. It is still possible for children and very sensitive individuals to have a reaction to it, so is best to test it on the inside of the elbow if in doubt.
Every second year, the ocotea tree produces large flowers called “Ishpingo” which are also distilled into an essential oil.
Cautions
• Generally recognized as sage at normal dosages.
• Ocotea cybarum essential oil, a different species of Ocotea, should not be used internally; this oil is very different and not interchangeable with Amazon Cinnamon essential oil.
