Observations and Anecdotal Information
The “sweet gum” tree grows in many locations around the world, and has been used for thousands of years as a medicinal treatment. It is known and loved by ancient Egyptians, Native Americans, and many Asian cultures.
Ancient biblical texts have referred to it as “Balm of Gilead”, though several other plant substances were also known by this name, especially oil made from cottonwood buds.
Stryrax has a surprising and wonderful aroma, and is often extracted as an absolute with solvents, so it is important to know your source.
Styrax is a decongestant, helpful for all kinds of respiratory ailments, including sinusitis, influenza, pneumonia, and the common cold. It must be diluted profusely with other oils for diffusion, as it will create a gummy clog in the diffuser if used in its pure state.
It has been used for skin treatments, closing wounds, treating cellulite condition, psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis, acne, ringworm, hemorrhoids, and itching. It is so mild that it can often be used neat (full strength), or diluted by 50%.
It is anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and breaks down deposits and toxicity in the lymph system for removal. It can be applied as a compress on swollen lymph glands and areas where fluid has accumulated.
