Observations and Anecdotal Information
Spikenard is an ancient essential oil used by Egyptian, Ayurvedic, and biblical healers. It has been used as an anointing oil in rituals and ceremonies, as well as a medicinal oil. It is well known to be King Tutankhamen’s perfume, and said to be worth its weight in gold.
A relative of the valerian plant, Green Spikenard is the aromatic world’s strongest sedative essential oil. It is used in the treatment of relieving migraines, insomnia, and nervous tension.
It can help the body unwind from stress patterns simply by inhaling the aroma, or through massage or spinal compress treatments.
It is a strong cardiotonic, regulating blood pressure, and can ease cardiac pain.
It has been used with success in treating scleroderma, and can heal inflammation and rashes of the skin, including dandruff as well as fungal infections like athlete's foot. For these purposes, it can be blended with moringa botanical oil for a stronger effect.
Spikenard may be used as a deodorant as it regulates odors and excessive sweating. With its earthy/woody aroma, it can also be diffused for neutralizing odors in the air.
It promotes healthy reproductive organs for both males and females, and is even known to lessen cramps for women who are experiencing strong PMS symptoms. For relief of menstrual cramps, place one drop into a tablespoon of carrier oil (i.e. coconut, jojoba, etc.), apply to affected area, then place a warm compress over it.
Spikenard is one of the oils used in the Egyptian ascension process. It clears and balances the crown and pineal chakras, and opens connection from the higher chakras into the heart and root chakras. It's no wonder its been used as an annointing oil for centuries!
